Sanya: convenience and choice
Sanya is the default base for most visitors to Hainan, and for good reason: the international airport, high-speed rail, a huge range of hotels at every price point, and the widest choice of restaurants and attractions on the island.
For families, the advantages are practical: Yalong Bay's calm water, resort kids' clubs, easy taxis, hospitals and shopping. You can plan a week without a car and never be stuck.
The trade-off is cost. Peak-season hotel rates in Sanya are among the highest in China, and dining in resort areas is expensive.
Lingshui: quieter and cheaper
Lingshui sits on the southeast coast, roughly 40-60 minutes by car or rail from Sanya. It has two well-known resort areas, Clear Water Bay and Perfume Bay, plus Fenjiezhou Island and Nanwan Monkey Island as attractions.
The main advantage is value: similar beach quality at noticeably lower prices, particularly for longer stays and self-catering apartments. Beaches are less crowded and the pace is slower.
The trade-off is dependency on a car. Resorts are spread out, restaurants outside hotels are limited, and public transport is thin. Families travelling without a car may find Sanya easier.
Who should choose which
- First-time visitors to Hainan → Sanya
- Families without a car → Sanya
- Families with a car or driver → Lingshui (better value, quieter)
- Long stays on a budget → Lingshui
- Travellers wanting nightlife and dining variety → Sanya
- Repeat visitors who have done Sanya → Lingshui
Practical notes
Both are on the east-coast high-speed rail line, so day trips between them are easy without a car. Many visitors base in Sanya and take a day trip to Fenjiezhou Island in Lingshui rather than moving hotels.
If your trip is short and you want everything within reach, stay in Sanya. If you are staying a week or more and want to cut costs without losing beach quality, Lingshui is a strong option, provided you have transport.
