Yalong Bay: the classic resort beach
Yalong Bay is the bay most people picture when they think of Sanya: a 7 km curve of pale sand, calm water and a near-continuous line of international resorts set in tropical gardens.
Its biggest advantage is the combination of swimmable water and mature resort infrastructure. The bay is sheltered, so the sea stays calm, which suits families with children. Resorts here have had years to refine service and landscaping.
It is also closer to Sanya city and to attractions such as the Tropical Paradise Forest Park, and the ferry to Wuzhizhou Island is a short drive away.
The trade-off is that outside the resorts there is relatively little: dining and shopping options are limited, so most guests eat on property.
Haitang Bay: newer luxury and duty-free
Haitang Bay is Sanya's newer luxury strip, developed later and therefore built with larger resorts, bigger pools and more contemporary design. It is the closest bay to Hainan's duty-free shopping complex, which is a major draw for many visitors.
Because it developed later, there is more variety in price bands, and a growing cluster of restaurants and shops outside the resorts.
The trade-off is distance: it is further from Sanya city and from the airport transfer is longer, and the area outside resort complexes still feels less established than Yalong Bay.
Who should choose which
- Families with young children → Yalong Bay (calm water, established resorts)
- First-time visitors wanting the classic Sanya beach → Yalong Bay
- Travellers planning to shop duty-free → Haitang Bay
- Luxury travellers wanting the newest resorts → Haitang Bay
- People who want to eat outside the hotel → Haitang Bay (slightly better)
- Short trips with limited time → Yalong Bay (closer to city and airport)
Practical notes
Both bays are resort-oriented; neither is a budget backpacker area. If you want street food and local restaurants, Dadonghai or Sanya city is a better base.
A practical approach for a week-long trip is to split your stay: a few nights in Yalong Bay for the beach, then a few in Haitang Bay for shopping and a newer resort.
