Sanya: the polished all-rounder
Sanya is Hainan's main tourist hub and the easiest place to base yourself. Yalong Bay has the calmest water and the densest cluster of international resorts; Dadonghai is closer to the city and cheaper; Haitang Bay is the newest luxury strip with duty-free shopping nearby.
Its main strengths are convenience and variety: an international airport, high-speed rail connections, island day trips to Wuzhizhou, rainforest parks, and a huge restaurant scene.
The trade-off is crowds and price. In Chinese New Year and summer holidays, Yalong Bay and Dadonghai get busy, and hotel rates can double or triple.
Wanning: surfing and space
Wanning sits on the east coast about an hour by high-speed rail from Sanya. Its reputation comes from Riyue Bay, one of China's best-known surfing beaches, and Shimei Bay, a quieter stretch with several large resorts.
The waves here are more consistent than in Sanya's sheltered bays, which is why surf schools and competitions cluster here. Beaches are wider and less developed, and prices for food and accommodation are generally lower.
The trade-off is logistics: without a car, moving between beaches and restaurants is less convenient, and the nightlife and dining scene is much smaller.
Who should choose which
- Families with young children → Sanya, especially Yalong Bay (calm water, resort facilities)
- Divers and snorkellers → Sanya (Wuzhizhou, Fenjiezhou day trips)
- Surfers and kitesurfers → Wanning (Riyue Bay)
- Travellers wanting quiet and value → Wanning (Shimei Bay)
- First-time visitors to Hainan → Sanya (easier, more to do)
- Repeat visitors who have done Sanya → Wanning
Practical notes
Both are reachable on the Hainan east-coast high-speed rail line. Sanya has the international airport; Wanning does not, so most visitors fly into Sanya or Haikou and take the train.
Surf season in Wanning is generally better from autumn to spring, while Sanya's bays stay calm year-round, which suits swimming and diving rather than surfing.
A common and practical combination is to base in Sanya for attractions and add two or three nights in Wanning for surfing or quiet beach time.
